Special Programme in Science (SPS)

SPS Alumni Talk by Dr Lee Kean Loon and CGG Recruitment

The talk, held on 06 September 2017 at LT31, features Dr. Lee Kean Loon. Kean Loon was a physics major. Upon graduation, he took up NGS scholarship to pursue his Ph.D. at Center of Quantum Technology, before spending two post-doc stints at CQT and Newcastle University. Kean Loon is now back in Singapore, working for CGG as a software developer, thus shifting his career from academia to industry. CGG (www.cgg.com/en) is a multinational company, specializing in using a wide range of high-end technologies to produce high-quality images of the Earth’s subsurface for exploration, production, and optimization of oil and gas reservoir. Hence, this talk was organized in a different format than the usual SPS alumni talk.

It started with a thorough introduction of CGG's profile and scope by colleagues from CGG before Kean Loon actually took the stage. Kean Loon shared his challenges when moving from academia to industry. He shared, for instance, how journal publications (which is typically one of the important benchmarks in academia) are mostly irrelevant to the industry. An advice when one is applying to industry, as Kean Loon further elaborated, is thus to replace publication track record from the CV with more emphasis on the relevant skill-sets. In Kean Loon's line of job, it will be his mastery of C, C++, and Fortran, as well as parallel processing (OpenMP, MPI and GPU-based programming).

The talk ended with a networking session between the audience and CGG's colleagues. We wish Kean Loon's all the best in his future endeavor.
